*Warning: This article contains spoilers for the finale of Happy Valley.*

Happy Valley came to its phenomenal close last night, with Tommy Lee Royce setting himself on fire and Catherine Cawood leaving the police force, finally finding peace.

It was breath-taking ride from start to finish, but naturally fans are desperate for more – even if according to writer Sally Wainwright it’s never going to happen.

Among the key moments in the last ever episode came when Ryan Cawood (Rhys Connah) told the police everything he knew about Tommy’s whereabouts, and cleared up why he went to see him in prison.

Despite Catherine’s (Sarah Lancashire) biggest fears that Ryan looked up to Tommy (James Norton) and would one day turn out to be a monster like his dad, she couldn’t have been more wrong.

In her own words: ‘He’s a prince.’

While there might not be anymore episodes of Happy Valley left, Rhys Connah has shared the moment which he feels shapes Ryan’s future beyond the course of the show.

At the police station, he told Catherine that if anything he just felt sorry for Tommy, but he knew that ultimately his father wasn’t ever going to be the dad he wanted. He belonged in prison.

While at the station, Detective Superintendent Andy Shepherd (Vincent Franklin) tells Ryan there’s ‘something about him’ after mistaking him for a new police recruit.

‘Me and Sarah were speaking about that scene on the day we were filming it. She said for her, that sets up how the story is going to carry on after the cameras have stopped rolling, he told RadioTimes.com.

‘This is the final season of Happy Valley. This is the end, but that provides context for the story after, so we can see a little bit past how season 3 ends. And I do think that Ryan would become a police officer.’

Rhys wasn’t the only one who felt the superintendent sealed Ryan’s future, with many speculating he’ll be the central character in a future spin-off series.

‘Did I spot a teaser for a possible future spin-off series when the Detective Superintendent says to Ryan “I thought you were a new recruit. Something about you” and Ryan gives a little smile,’ noted one viewer, while many others had the same idea.

Someone else tweeted: ‘Several years down the line when Rhys Connah is in his early twenties, there will be a spin-off series starring Ryan as an ambitious young detective, honouring his grandmother and trying to help the Tommy Lee Royces of the world.’

Sally Wainwright, however, sounds as though she’s ready to leave Happy Valley behind.

She said: ‘The intention developed through conversations I had with Sarah to make it a three-parter, to make a trilogy. We always said this would be the final season and it is very definitely is the final season.’

Happy Valley is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
