Madonna has hit back at the criticism she received over her appearance at the Grammy Awards 2023.

The Like a Virgin singer, 64, was at the glitzy bash to introduce Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ Unholy performance.

But fans and fellow celebrities took savage swipes at the pop icon’s look, with the likes of Lorraine Kelly making a brutal dig and remarking: ‘What’s going on ?!’

Piera Morgan also weighed in and was the subject of a backlash for a ‘spiteful’ post in which he compared the Material Girl hitmaker’s get-up to a Halloween costume.

On Tuesday, the Vogue performer responded to the cruel jibes in a defiant Instagram post in which she blasted ‘ageism and misogyny’.

She wrote that while she was there for the Stay With Me star and Kim, noting that she became the first trans woman to perform at the ceremony, ‘many people chose to only talk about close-up photos of me.’

‘[They were] taken with a long lens camera by a press photographer that would distort anyone’s face!!,’ the Lika a Prayer chart topper explained.

Madonna continued: ‘Once again I am caught in the glare of ageism and misogyny that permeates the world we live in.

‘A world that refuses to celebrate women past the age of 45 and feels the need to punish her If she continues to be strong-willed, hard-working and adventurous.

‘I have never apologized for any of the creative choices I have made nor the way that I look or dress and I’m not going to start.

‘I have been degraded by the media since the beginning of my career but I understand that this is all a test and I am happy to do the trailblazing so that all the women behind me can have an easier time in the years to come.’

The Hung Up singer quoted a lyric from the Beyonce hit Break My Soul, adding: ‘You won’t break my soul.’
