Warning: spoilers ahead for The Apprentice.

Tonight’s episode of The Apprentice saw not one, but two candidates leave the process, but there was only one person fired by Lord Alan Sugar when push came to shove in the boardroom.

In week 6 of the 2023 BBC series, the contestants were whisked away to the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai to organise corporate away days for two international clients based in the area.

In the end, it was decided by Lord Sugar that it was time to bid farewell to safari guide Joe Phillips, shortly after theatre school owner Reece Donnelly bowed out on account of his health.

Ahead of the latest instalment airing on BBC One, Reece released a statement explaining that he was ‘unable to complete the task in Dubai for health reasons and therefore I could not continue on The Apprentice’.

‘I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time on the show and I’m looking forward to watching my fellow candidates in the rest of the series,’ he added.

‘My goal of being on The Apprentice was to showcase that Scotland has amazing businesses and entrepreneurs, I really hope I’ve done that. I’m so grateful for my time with Lord Sugar and the team.’

During the task in Dubai, it was up to each of the teams to try and make as much money as possible with their luxurious away days.

While one team decided to focus more on the traditional side of Dubai, taking their clients to the desert on their doorstep, the opposing side decided to veer in a different direction, showing off the glamour that the city has to offer.

When the candidates returned to the UK, Joe was in the losing team put in the hot seat by Lord Sugar.

Deciding that Joe was the most at fault for the loss of the task, the business magnate said: ‘Joseph, you were responsible for the kitchen and ultimately that was one of the reasons for the failure of this task. The food was burnt, and the service was poor, so it is with regret Joe, you’re fired!’

Speaking in the taxi after his departure, the fired contestant said: ‘I’m a zoologist and I’ve been thrown into the business world.

‘I’ve learnt so much from this process and I can’t wait to take that knowledge and apply it to my own business and hopefully make a success of it.’

The Apprentice returns next Thursday at 9pm on BBC one and BBC iPlayer.
