Harrison Ford is joining the MCU, and he’ll play a powerful character.

The Star Wars and Indiana Jones star, 80, is set to become a part of yet another massive franchise as he joins Marvel in the upcoming Captain America movie.

Those hoping to see the veteran actor gain powers of super strength or flight may be disappointed, as Ford is to instead gain the power of, well, the presidency of the United States.

It was confirmed this week after major speculation that the Han Solo star would be joining the cast of Captain America: New World Order, where he will play the President: Thaddeus Ross.

Harrison takes over from the late William Hurt to play ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, who has become president at the time the upcoming film is set.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige confirmed the news in an interview with EW, who said filming for the movie would begin ‘relatively shortly.’

Ford was ’embracing the role’ and is ‘tireless with the amount of work he does,’ Feige added.

Thaddeus will play a ‘big part’ in the next MCU instalment, and ‘we’ll be seeing the dynamic between Captain America and the president of the United States in a way that is just incredible.’

Like millions of others, Feige is a big fan of the Blade Runner star, and admitted it was a ‘dream’ of his to gt the actor on board since he starred in Jon Favreau’s Cowboys and Aliens in 2011.

‘I was always very jealous of that, so to have him finally in the MCU is just incredible. It’s like, I can cross that off the wish list,’ he said.

Captain America: New World Order is set to be released on May 3 2024, with The Cloverfield Paradox director Julius Onah helming the project.

Anthony Mackie is set to take on the role of the titular character, with Chris Evans confirming in July that he would not be returning.

Mackie’s character Sam Wilson, formerly The Falcon, became the Captain after Steve Rogers passed the title on to him at the end of 2019’s devastating Avengers: Endgame, the last time Evans appeared in the franchise.

Tim Blake Nelson is also confirmed to return as Samuel Sterns, who was first introduced in 2008 flick The Incredible Hulk.

It comes amid the news that the 4th instalment in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man franchise is officially in the works.

Following the success of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which claimed over $1.9billion (£1.57bn) at the box office worldwide and treated fans to cameos from previous Peter Parkers Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, it was almost guaranteed to happen – but it’s nice to finally get the confirmation.
