Joe Lycett’s protest against David Beckham’s association with the 2022 Qatar World Cup has been nominated for a major award.

The comedian pretended to destroy £10,000 in protest against the footballer’s involvement in event, thanks to Qatar’s harsh laws against homosexuality and other human rights abuses.

Joe had urged him to back out of a reported multi-million pound deal with Qatar, and when he didn’t respond, posted a video of himself shredding the money.

But after sparking a major conversation and some backlash, Joe revealed the money in the shredder was fake and he had donated the sum to LGBTQ+ charities: what he had shredded instead was David’s iconic cover shoot for GQ magazine.

David eventually issued a statement following the stunt acknowledging there were ‘different and strongly held views about engagement in the Middle East’ and it was ‘positive’ that ‘debate about the key issues has been stimulated directly’ by the World Cup being held in the region.

The British LGBT awards have now nominated Joe for the media moment award, for drawing awareness to the issue and sparking a massive conversation around the lack of rights in Qatar.

Other categories include sports category, which to nobody’s surprise heavily features the champion England Lionesses, with I’m A Celebrity winner Hill Scott, captain Leah Williamson and striker Beth Mead each in with the chance to win a gong.

Going head-to-hed for the celebrity ally award are the likes of Alison Hammond, Harry Potter star Emma Watson, Harry Styles, Michelle Visage and Sir Patrick Stewart.

Meanwhile, as reported by The Mirror, Anne-Marie, Lizzo, Yungblug and Rina Sawayama are among those nominated for music artist of the year.

The likes of The Crown star Emma Corrin fight to be LGBT+ celebrity of the year.

Each year, the awards celebrate prominent LGBT+ stars as well as allies who support or inspire the community, and who have worked to advance the rights of LGBT people during the last year.

The 2022 awards saw major celebrities including Olly Alexander, Alan Carr, Daniel Radcliffe, Lady Gaga and Dua Lipa make the shortlist.

Speaking about the 2023 nominations, British LGBT Awards founder Sarah Garrett MBE said it was ‘more important than ever that we shine a light on those who have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the LGBT+ community, during what has been another very challenging 12 months for the community.’

She added: ‘The nominees, which include an exciting mix of famous LGBT+ faces, allies and organisations have all demonstrated a commitment to advancing LGBT+ rights.

‘The awards on 23 June will be a huge celebration of our culture and we’re so proud to continue championing the LGBT+ voice.’
