Dame Prue Leith and her son, the Conservative MP Danny Kruger, will tonight (February 16) explore the legalisation of euthanasia in a Channel 4 documentary.

The Great British Bake Off host is in favour of assisted dying, while her son, the MP for Devizes is against it.

Leith previously revealed that her former husband and her son’s father asked doctors for ‘assistance’ with dying after suffering a long illness.

The documentary may leave people wondering about the South-African restaurateur’s family life – does she currently have a husband? And how many children does she have?

Who is Prue Leith’s husband?

Leith has been married to retired clothing designer John Playfair since 2016, after meeting him five years earlier, in 2011.

The couple tied the knot in Scotland when she was 76 and he was 70.

Discussing their romance on The Jonathan Ross Show in 2021, Leith said: ‘What people don’t realise, especially young people, it actually feels exactly the same at 70, 80 or 60 when you lust after someone as you do when you’re 20.

‘In my generation, girls would look at their telephones and long for it to ring… and nowadays, when I met John, I was thinking, do I dare text him… is that pushy, or not funny, why would he answer. 

‘All this rubbish goes through your head. You behave like a teenager. It’s just wonderful.’

Was Prue Leith married before?

Leith was married to South African author Rayne Kruger for 28 years, from 1974 until his death aged 80 in December 2002. 

Kruger had fallen ill with emphysema, which caused a lung infection.

Leith had met Rayne when he was still married to Nan Munro, the best friend of Leith’s mother, who she’d been staying with.

Leith has two children, both of whom she shares with her former husband Rayne Kruger.

Tory MP Danny, who was born in 1974, and Li-Da whom Prue and Rayne adopted a year later from war-torn Cambodia, when she was 16 months old.

Li-Da followed in her mother’s footsteps and also adopted a child, after cancer left her with fertility issues.

A 2020 documentary followed Leith and her daughter’s journey to Cambodia to explore Li-Da’s heritage.

Prue & Danny’s Death Road Trip airs on Channel 4 tonight at 9pm.
