Joe Lycett thanks bestie Liz Truss and calls for Richard Sharp to quit as BBC chairperson in iconic speech for comedy game changer award-Emily Bashforth-Entertainment – Metro

Joe Lycett gave the acceptance speech of all acceptance speeches when accepting his comedy game changer award.
The funny man was honoured with the prestigious award at the National Comedy Awards on Friday in recognition of his work to inspire social change through comedy.
Whether it was his campaign against white plastic and confronting Shell on greenwashing, or him highlighting inequalities faced by the LGTBQ+ community and challenging David Beckham to relinquish his role as a Qatar ambassador, Joe has kept us all gripped with his antics.
So, when he accepted his trophy at the Roundhouse venue in North London, it was only right that the star gave an iconic speech.
Grayson Perry presented the special category, hailing Joe an ‘artist’, as well as a prankster, a disrupter, and a revolutionary.
He added that he’s ‘always unpredictable, always remarkable, always brilliantly funny, and a really nice bloke.’

Instantly embarrassed by the outpouring of love and rapturous applause in the room, Joe urged everyone to ‘sit down’.
He began in his speech: ‘I’d like to thank Liz Truss, couldn’t do it without ya, girl!’, leaving everyone in stitches.
Of course, Joe’s ‘friendship’ with the former Prime Minister began during her mere 44 days in office, with him later (sarcastically) encouraging her to run again for leader of the Tory party, and even creating portraits of her.
Basically, he’s always had her back.
Referencing his stint with Hugo Boss as his legal name, Joe also shouted out the fashion brand in his speech, after he previously claimed the brand was targeting small companies that use the word ‘boss’ in their names, sending cease and desist letters.

‘Hugo Boss, I’d like to thank for designing those lovely Nazi uniforms and for their unending appetite to protect their intellectual copyright,’ he added.
‘Everyone on Twitter with a football team logo as their profile picture, for keeping me grounded,’ Joe also thanked, following his World Cup shredding moment.
He didn’t end there, also shouting out former secretary of state for digital, culture and media, Nadine Dorries.
‘To Nadine Dorries, for everything she’s done for culture,’ he laughed, after previously mocking her resignation letter to the PM.

Joe went on to target the BBC: ‘To the BBC chairman Richard Sharp, for that loan you gave me, thank you, Richard. I was struggling when I started out and he kept me afloat.’
He concluded: ‘I’d like to dedicate this award to the Channel 4 lawyers who have protected me throughout my career from myself.
‘And with that in mind, I’d like to say that Richard Sharp should stand down as the BBC chairman and that’s not my opinion, but the opinion of Channel 4 television.’

Naturally, viewers of the awards at home were left in stitches, hailing Joe a ‘legend’ for his speech.
‘Joe Lycett deserves all the awards!!’, one person tweeted.
‘All hail the mighty Joe Lycett’, another wrote.
