American actress Barbara Bosson has died, aged 83.

The Emmy-nominated star found fame following her role as divorcee Fay Furillo on NBC’s Hill Street Blues.

Co-created by her then-husband Steven Bochco, the drama was critically acclaimed and loved by many.

Her death was announced by her director son, Jesse Bochco, via social media on Monday.

He uploaded the news with a caption that read: ‘More spirit and zest than you could shake a stick at.

‘When she loved you, you felt it without a doubt. If she didn’t, you may well have also known that too.

The star’s offspring also shared a picture of Barbara holding him in her arms when he was a baby.

The actress was nominated for an Emmy award for her role as prosecutor Miriam Grasso on ABC’s Murder One.

She was also famed for her work on three well-known ABC series – Hooperman, Cop Rock, and Murder One – all of which were co-created by her former husband.

Bosson was born on November 1, 1939, in Charleroi, Pennsylvania and was raised thereafter in Belle Vernon.

In 1957, she then moved to Florida with her family before deciding to move to New York.

She worked as a secretary for the American Conservatory Theater and also as a Playboy bunny while living in the city – all the while taking acting classes on the side.

The star once told the St. Petersburg Times in 1990: ‘I put up with a lot of leering men to be able to study acting’.
