As soon as House of the Dragon season 1 ended, fans immediately wanted more of the HBO drama right away, as Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) prepares for battle.

With season 2 now in production, speculation over the release date of the new episodes is continuing to rise, as viewers want to know what will happen next in the civil war between the House of Targaryen, with Rhaenyra going up against her former-best-friend-turned-stepmother Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke).

An update has now been revealed as to when audiences can expect its return, with the fantasy series airing on Sky and NOW in the UK.

Casey Bloys, the content CEO of HBO and HBO Max, recently opened up about the timeline, saying that 2024 is a ‘good guess’ for its launch.

Speaking to Variety, he added that it’s also a ‘good guess’ that it wouldn’t be eligible for the 2024 Emmy season, the eligibility for which ends on May 31 2024, meaning that we could be looking at a summer release date.

So considering we’re now almost three months into 2023, that isn’t too long to wait!

Casey also recalled how when House of the Dragon was in the early stages of planning, it was ‘historically’ very unlike HBO to pursue a spin-off show.

‘When we started talking about doing a Thrones prequel that was something that HBO had historically never done,’ he said.

‘I had some people internally saying, “This is crazy. What are you doing?” That said, I think that there’s something about the universe that George [RR Martin] created that lent itself to [spin-offs]. There’s a huge history, a lot of different families, a lot of different wars and battles.’

This year, House of the Dragon won the Golden Globe for best drama television series, while Emma was nominated for best actress.

The SAG Awards are due to take place in a few days’ time, where the programme is also up for outstanding performance by a stunt ensemble in a television series.

House of the Dragon is available to watch on Sky and NOW.
