Stephen Fry has officially been announced as the host for the UK reboot of the popular US quiz show Jeopardy!.

Jeopardy!, which has broadcast over 8,000 episodes since its first broadcast in 1964, remains one of the most-viewed gameshow on American TV.

Rather than answering questions, contestants are given clues about general knowledge subjects and must identify the person, place, or thing being described.

Once reaching the final, hopefuls have the chance to win big cash prizes, with some contestants winning millions across several Jeopardy! episodes.

Now the UK is getting an ITV revival of its own version of the quiz, having already aired on Channel 4, ITV, and Sky One between 1983 and 1996.

In a statement, Fry, 65, said: ‘In the United States, Jeopardy! is a phenomenon like no other. Whenever I’m in America, I do my damnedest to catch it every weekday.’

The former Q.I. host continued, saying to viewers: ‘The idea of hosting it here in the UK makes me dizzy with delight.’

‘Such a dedicated quizzing nation as ours will, I hope, welcome this uniquely beguiling and endlessly rewarding game.’

The ITV reboot will air during the daytime, with 20 episodes said to be in production already. Fry has promised a ‘modern twist’ will be applied.

ITV’s Head of Entertainment, Katie Rawcliffe, said: ‘There is no one better to host this classic game show than Stephen, bringing knowledge and entertainment to all of our viewers.’

Jeopardy! was famously hosted by the late Alex Trebek for more than 35 years between 1984 and his death in 2020 at the age of 80.

Its reboot on UK television comes along rumours that several favourites from yesteryear will be returning to our screens in the near future.

Popular 90s gameshow Gladiators is set to return, with filming taking place in Sheffield over the summer, while Big Brother is also due for a comeback on ITV2.

Last year, music mogul Simon Cowell said that a return for singing competition The X Factor was ‘more likely’ than ever before.

Earlier this week, Fry was accused of making inappropriate jokes at a cricketing event for Marylebone Cricket Club, where he is club president.

Club members have apparently lodged complaints after Fry’s material at the event was deemed to be offensive to some members of the audience.
