It’s been rumoured for months but Microsoft has confirmed the existence of a next gen version of The Outer Worlds on both Xbox and PS5.

Action role-player The Outer Worlds may only be four years old but a lot has happened to developer Obsidian in that time, most obviously getting bought by Microsoft.

That process actually started before the game’s release, but because publishing deals had already been signed it still ended up being multiformat. That will also be the case for The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition, which is coming to Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.

The Spacer’s Choice Edition will include all the previously released DLC, plus improved graphics, and will be out next week, on Tuesday, March 7. If you have the original last gen version there’s no free upgrade but you can pay £5 to get yourself up to date.

To be specific, the new version will feature improved lighting, higher resolution graphics, improved performance, faster load times, a new dynamic weather system, and more detailed character models.

The level cap will also be increased, and the game includes the DLC expansion Murder On Eridanos, which wasn’t very good, and Peril On Gorgon, which we’ve never played.

Despite the announcement, there’s been no update on when to expect The Outer Worlds 2, which at one point was vaguely implied to be out in 2022 but now seems unlikely to be out until at least next year.

It’s hard to tell though as so little information has been released about it, including whether it will still be multiformat.

Microsoft will be publishing this time, so it probably won’t be, although that may depend on whether they’re still trying to convince monopoly investigators to let them buy Activision Blizzard.
