It is time to return to a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away with the third season of The Mandalorian.

The highly anticipated return of the Disney Plus Star Wars series with catch back up with Pedro Pascal’s Djin, as he continues on his adventures with Baby Yoda – sorry, Grogu – all the while reckoning with his place in the galaxy now that he wields the dark-sabre.

Being a part of the Star Wars franchise, The Mandalorian is just one part of a sprawling enterprise that encompasses movies, TV shows, video games and much more.

As a result, keeping up with everything Star Wars can seem like a daunting prospect, with prequels, sequels and spin-offs all taking place at different eras in the franchise’s timeline.

So, just when does The Mandalorian take place in the grand Star Wars narrative?

When is The Mandalorian set in the Star Wars series timeline?

The Mandalorian takes place five years following the events of Return Of The Jedi, so it is set in between the original trilogy and the sequel trilogy.

Should you want to get nerdier about it, time is measured a bit differently in the Star Wars universe.

The Star Wars timeline hinges on a single event – the Battle of Yavin, otherwise known as the first assault on the Death Star in the original Star Wars movie, A New Hope.

So, the original Star Wars takes place at 0 BBY – Before the Battle of Yavin – and everything after is ABY – After the Battle of Yavin.

With this in mind, The Mandalorian takes place in 9 ABY – nine years after A New Hope.

Here is a look at where The Mandalorian and everything else Star Wars fits into the overall timeline:

The Star Wars timeline

The Phantom Menace – 32 BBY
Attack of the Clones – 22 BBY
The Clone Wars – 22 BBY-19 BBY
Revenge of the Sith – 19 BBY
The Bad Batch – 19 BBY
Solo: A Star Wars Story – 13 BBY – 10 BBY
Andor – 5 BBY
