Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock has opened up about his major weight loss journey after he underwent gastric sleeve surgery last year.

The ex-England footballer, 54, admitted his weight crept up to 27 stone during lockdown, but he has now lost over six thanks to the operation, which he claimed has ‘saved [his] life’.

The I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here star went under the knife in September last year after being inspired by Towie’s James ‘Arg’ Argent, who lost 13 stone since having the same operation in May 2021.

‘After years of struggling with my weight, I decided it was finally time to take action,’ the star wrote on Twitter.

‘Last year I had gastric sleeve surgery with @WeAreTransform_ & I’m well into my weight loss journey, to date I’ve lost 93lbs. This is a fresh start & I’m excited about this new chapter.’

Speaking to MailOnline, Neil said Covid was a ‘big factor’ in his weight gain as he recalled ‘sitting on my backside at home getting bigger and bigger’ after ‘struggling’ in the pandemic.

‘I got lazier,’ he recalled, as he explained: ‘I was eating loads and loads of takeaways, making bacon sandwiches just for something to do.

‘It really didn’t help when they brought out Uber Deliveries, I was getting ice cream delivered from Co-op… it’s f****** madness.’

Which team has what it takes to win the Premier League this year?

But Neil called it ‘fate’ when he met Towie’s Arg at a charity football match and knew he had to make a change.

The ex-Liverpool and Spurs defender ‘feared for [his] life’ at his largest, and credited the operation and subsequent weight loss as having ‘cheated death’.

‘The way I was going, who knows how long I could continue like that,’ he said.

Back in 2019, Harry Redknapp told Neil to get himself checked out after he seemed to be struggling while filming alongside other football legends for TV show Harry’s Heroes.
