Danny Dyer and David Tennant have been photographed in character on the set of the Disney Plus TV adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s raunchy Rutshire Chronicles series, just ahead of their casting being announced.

And it’s safe to say it took us a second to clock Dyer in one of his new roles after leaving EastEnders at Christmas.

The 45-year-old was clad in a dark suit and crisp white shirt – but looked a world away from his usual self with a dark brown wig with fringe and matching (impressive) moustache.

He’s set to play self-made electronics millionaire Freddie Jones on the show, while Doctor Who star David Tennant was also snapped in a big cosy jacket hiding the smart black tie outfit of his character, television controller Lord Tony Baddingham.

Tennant, 51, was also wigged up in a darker brown affair with a swept across style and deep side parting at the 16th-century country house in Gloucestershire where they were filming.

The pair will be joined by an impressive cast for Rivals, including Poldark star Aidan Turner, Emily Atack, Katherine Parkinson, Victoria Smurfit, Claire Rushbrook and Luke Pasqualino.

Rivals, published in 1988 and one of 10 novels from the Rutshire Chronicles series, will be adapted into an eight-part series of the same name, set in 1986 and featuring 85-year-old Cooper’s notorious lothario Rupert Campbell-Black, played by British actor Alex Hassell.

Good Omens actor Tennant is Rupert’s single-minded and egotistical Rutshire neighbour Lord Tony Baddingham, controller of Corinium Television in which a ‘long-simmering power struggle between them threatens to boil over when the two men lock horns over the future of Corinium’, Disney has teased.

Caught in the crossfires, Turner will play TV presenter Declan O’Hara, while The Inbetweeners actress Atack will be seen as Sarah Stratton, the new wife of the deputy prime minister.

Cooper, who serves as an executive producer on the series, said: ’I’m utterly enchanted to be able to announce our all-star line-up for Rivals. Featuring some of the best acting talent that the British Isles has to offer, I couldn’t have dreamed of a better ensemble cast.

‘I cannot wait to be on set and see them bring the characters I love so much to life. The minute we met with Alex we knew he’d perfectly embody my all-time hero, the iconic, racy, ruthless, and devastatingly handsome, Rupert Campbell-Black. Viewers are in for a treat!’

Rivals will stream on Disney Plus at a later date.
