People are just realising what the laundry signs on your labels mean – and they will help your clothes last longer

WITH most of us putting on a load of washing at least once a week, it’s safe to say it’s big a part of our lives.

But do we know how to properly wash our clothes?

Every garment we wash has their own specific cleaning requirements indicated by the symbols on their tags.

Fashion fan Liv confessed she didn’t know the meaning of the laundry symbols on her clothes tags and has been ruining her clothes for years.

She said: “Am I the only one who didn’t know this??”

“I really wish I knew this sooner. I have been ruining my clothes for years.”

The fashion fan explained the different symbols online in a TikTok video online.

First you have the basket symbols which indicate how you should wash a garment. If the basket of water has an ‘X’ across it, it means you shouldn’t wash that garment.

If the basket of water symbol has a number inside that indicates the temperature you should set your washing machine to. If the basket of water symbol has hand in it, the garment is hand wash only.

Next we move on to the circle symbols.

A clear circle indicates dry cleaning. Likewise and ‘X’ over a circle means do not dry clean the garment. If the circle has a ‘P’ or a ‘F’ inside it needs to be cleaned by a professional.

The empty triangle is a bleaching symbol. If the symbol has a ‘CL’ inside it the symbol should be bleached with chlorine.

A triangle with straight diagonal lines should be bleached with non-chrome bleach. An ‘X’ over the symbol means do not bleach.

Clothes labels also have iron symbols. The dots on these symbols indicated the heat level your iron should be on when ironing the garment.

With one dot being low heat and three dots meaning high heat. If the iron symbol has and’ X’ on it the garment should never be ironed.

The square symbols indicate how you should dry your clothes.

A square with half a circle means the garment should be line dried. A square with a dash means the item should be dried flat. A circle inside the box indicated the item can be tumble dried.

Again the dots in these symbols indicate heat levels one being low and two being high. An ‘X’ over a circle in the box means do not tumble dry that item.

Liv’s video gained over 540,000 views but many viewers said they couldn’t be bothered to learn or read the symbols.

One user said: “I still won’t do this because I ain’t doing tons of loads because of a couple pieces of clothing.”

Another said: “I’m just gonna throw my clothes in the machine not decipher symbols lol.”
