Teletubbies new narrator Tituss Burgess has given an insight to the colourful creatures after getting the chance to meet them in real life.

In October last year, the long-running children’s television programme relaunched with a totally new sound after the American actor was cast to give a voice to the Teletubbies and their adventures.

The iconic quartet of Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po are recognisable for many, but Tituss, 44, wasn’t quite in the right age group to have grown up with them, so had never actually seen the show.

In an exclusive interview with Metro.co.uk, the performer, best known for his role in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, explained more about being cast.

‘It would imply I had a lot of prior knowledge about the Teletubbies or had even watched it,’ he admitted when asked just how he had got involved.

‘I’ve not had the experience that others have had consuming it,’ he added.

‘I knew nothing about Teletubbies until I got that job and went at watched it and was even further confused.’

But, Tituss added that he had come to embrace the characters with televisions on their tummies.

‘I have joined the family and find great affection for the Teletubbies and how they move in the world and the function they serve,’ he explained.

‘They are adorable and strange little creatures and I would do it all over again.

‘I had a lovely time narrating it.’

When asked more about meeting the characters, he confirmed they’d spent some time together, mentioning that their size was what surprised them most about seeing them in real life.

‘They are bigger than you think you are,’ he shared.

After appearing in Broadway musicals including Good Vibrations, Jersey Boys, Guys and Dolls and The Little Mermaid, Tituss is also about to join the second season of Schmigadoon, a show that pays homage to some of the best-known stage productions.

The comedy-drama series follows two New York doctors, Melissa (Cecily Strong) and Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) who wind up in the magical town of Schmigadoon, which is trapped in a Golden Age- style musical and only allows them to leave after finding true love.

In season 2the couple try and return to the town, but instead stumble across the much darker city of Schmicago, which pays satirical homage to sexy, dark 1960s and 1970s musicals.

This season Tituss acts as Narrator, partly a parody of The Leading Player from Pippin.

Teletubbies is streaming on Netflix.

Schmigadoon season 2 is streaming from Wednesday on Apple TV Plus.
