Jason Derulo might be on the lookout for the next music superstar, but he’s made it clear to one aspiring artist that he’s going to have to try a lot harder.

The performer is at the helm of the new reality singing series Project Icon, which challenges eight musicians to see whether they have got what it takes to transform from a bedroom singer into an all-round music star in just a few weeks.

Acting as mentors, Jason, his long-term manager Frank Harris, and Becky Hill might be doing their best to offer constructive criticism, but one contestant found himself in the firing line after failing to impress.

Jay Scott, a 28 influencer from Birmingham had previously appeared on The X Factor as part of boy band Kingsland Road, but in recent years has become best known for his viral TikToks with his 76-year-old dad Brian.

However, his first performance on Project Idol left an impression for all the wrong reasons.

Titled Rice, Peas and Chicken, Jay’s original song detailed his love of the dish, before explaining how ‘everyone thinks I am Indian, or Filipino, but I am Jamaican’, before he pulled out a flag to make his background clear.

‘I want to shake my bum…but first I want some rice, peas and chicken,’ he sung while enthusiastically dancing.

The three mentors and Jay’s fellow contestants didn’t quite know how to react, with some spending the entire performance looking into the distance.

However, once it wrapped up, there was a moment of silence before Becky exclaimed: ‘Wow.’

Jumping in, Jason said the song was ‘horrible’.

‘That might be one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard in my life actually,’ he said.

‘I’ve seen your videos; I’ve seen you dance and I think you’re one of the best performers here. But that song, that’s not the vibe for you.’

Taking it on the chin, Jay said that when doing ‘something out of the box’, people might not ‘get it’ straight away’, so he didn’t seem too disheartened.

Previously speaking about his new show, Jason told Metro.co.uk that it came about after observing that the lasting success rate for other talent show contestants was ‘really small’.

‘Those shows are only about singing but the music industry is about way more than that. You need to be able to create a song that touches people, perform on social media and be likeable, have a brand that people connect to, shine on camera and do interviews,’ he said.

He added that there was ‘a lot that goes into it’, and they would test contestants on various skills that would help them establish careers in the music industry.

Project Icon is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
