Ellie Goulding is back with new album Higher Than Heaven, and it’s everything her fans are hoping for.

Coming three years after previous album Brightest Blue, her fifth offering sees Ellie launch straight into it without wasting any time, with first track Midnight Dreams a strong start with a confident beat and catchy chorus.

The album as a whole is pure pop bliss with a twist of nostalgia – one you can happily imagine yourself having on while getting ready for a night out to put you in the form, even if it might not be the main event.

Ellie’s own sound is as present as ever, with the talented songwriter having credits on each of the songs.

Some tracks seem to take inspiration from the new wave of disco, such as in the beautifully upbeat By The End Of The Night and title track Higher Than Heaven.

At first listen, some of the songs appear a bit samey, if only because they each have a quirky beat and uplifting chorus, but they come into their own more with each listen.

This also means that each of the tracks on Higher Than Heaven have the potential to be a solid single.

Standout songs include the wistful Love Goes On and genuine bop Let It Die, with plenty on this album to dance to, and pretty much guaranteed to put you in a good mood.

Ellie’s sugary but strong voice comes through well on these tracks, adding to the uplifting vibe and pure joy of the album – just as important as any mournful ballad.

It’s not exactly groundbreaking, but it’s classic, joyful pop with a twist.

And really, why would we want any more?
