Channel 4 is set to air a documentary about Prince Andrew as part of its coverage of King Charles’ coronation.

The ceremony is set for May 6 with celebrations up and down the country, but the broadcaster has other plans with Emily Maitlis set for a TV return in a two part series breaking down her bombshell BBC interview with the royal.

Andrew – The Problem Prince will delve into the story behind Andrew’s Newsnight appearance and the scandal surrounding him, with palace insiders and BBC producer Sam McAlister also taking part.

Maitlis will give her own account of the work that went into the 2019 broadcast, which saw her challenge the Duke on his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

It will mark a major TV return for Maitlis, also serving as executive producer, after leaving the BBC and launching the News Agents podcast after accusing the broadcaster of bias towards the Conservatives.

As well as the scandal, the documentary will look into Andrew’s past, including his childhood and time serving in the military.

It will form part of Channel 4’s alternative coverage of the coronation, which will also give viewers another chance to see Prince Andrew: The Musical, which was first released late last year.

Channel 4’s chief content officer Ian Katz said: ‘Channel 4 exists to provide viewers with an alternative, so as the nation is engulfed by pomp, circumstance and forelock-tugging, we’ll be offering a rather less reverential slate of programmes, including Frankie Boyle’s case against the monarchy and The Windsors’ scabrous satirical take on the coronation.’

Boyle’s one off comedy special Farewell to the Monarchy was pulled from the schedules last year over fears of a fierce backlash after the death of Queen Elizabeth.

Following her death, the comedian tweeted: ‘Let’s spare a thought for everyone who was just putting the finishing touches to a humorous documentary about the monarchy.’

During the piece, he says: ‘Increasingly, the British monarchy appear like animals in a zoo that’s fallen on hard times – fidgety, balding, pacing up and down their marble cage, pausing only to chew their own tail off or commit a sex crime out of boredom.’

The Windsors is returning with Harry Enfield reprising his role as King Charles in a one-off special for the sitcom, which will see Hugh Skinner’s Prince William urge his father to scale back the coronation in light of the cost of living crisis.

Meanwhile, Harry and Meghan – portrayed by Richard Goulding and Kathryn Drysale – try to focus on their life away from the royals.
