The tragic death of actor Lance Reddick looks like it will force a rewrite of Guerrilla Games’ plans for the next Horizon game.

Actor Lance Reddick appeared in dozens of different movies, TV shows, and games during his career and it was always obvious he must’ve been a bit of a nerd, as he was in tons of video game related stuff.

From playing Albert Wesker (and being the only good thing in) the Netflix Resident Evil show to the recurring role of Commander Zavala in Destiny 2, his distinctive voice will be sadly missed, after he died of heart disease in March.

Horizon Forbidden West developer Guerrilla Games will be especially sad that he’s no longer with us, as it’s become clear they had major plans for his character Sylens.

The DLC Burning Shores was released on Wednesday, but Sony didn’t send review copies until Tuesday, so there’s currently almost no reviews and we won’t have ours ready until Friday at the earliest.

Given how Sony purposefully held back review copies of The Last Of Us on PC, because they knew it was a broken mess, that’s not a good sign, although so far Burning Shores seems far less disappointing.

What’s interesting though is that the main story of the DLC is clearly setting up the plot for a third entry and this seems to focus far more on Reddick’s character of Sylens than you might’ve expected, as many fans were disappointed he didn’t appear that much in the main game.

Without getting into spoilers, the end of the main mission involves Sylens talking about a weapon that can destroy series antagonist Nemesis, and that he needs protagonist Aloy’s help to find it.

The implication is that the original idea was for the pair to team-up and for Sylens to have a much more active role in the third game than he did in the previous titles.

What Guerrilla Games will do now is unclear, since even if they did recast the role, Reddick’s voice was so distinctive it would be immediately obvious to even casual fans.

One alternative is that Guerrilla may try to reduce the character’s role from what was originally intended, which seems like it would require a major rewrite – especially as Sylens is one of the only technically adept characters in the game, other than Aloy.

Whatever they do it’s certain to impact the development of the game, which hasn’t even been officially announced yet and so will almost certainly not be out until after 2024.

Reddick is also set to appear as the voice of Hellboy in new game Hellboy: Web Of Wyrd. He’s believed to have recorded all his lines before his death but he also has voicework for Destiny 2 that hasn’t been used yet, so it’s unclear which will be his final role.
