Trisha Goddard joked about Jerry Springer’s ‘naughty side’ as she paid tribute to the late TV icon.

The 65-year-old talk show host has reflected on her time getting to know Springer, who died this week aged 79 and was best known for showcasing dysfunctional families on The Jerry Springer Show, and she revealed he was ‘tongue in cheek’ about his work.

Appearing on Good Morning Britain, she said: ‘He was very tongue in cheek about it. He was great fun.

‘He was good at playing – when his producers used to go in and brief him, sometimes he’s literally just come on and just know what was on the card, the person’s name.

‘He called himself the ringmaster and it was like a circus. He did have a naughty side. [laughs] We were really a family. It’s gonna hit our NBC family – once you’re in the family, you don’t really leave.’

She described Springer as ‘quite a private person’ while being ‘part of the NBC family’ as they filmed their respective shows in the same studios and shared staff.

‘He was really, really sweet to me when I first came out to the USA,’ she said. ‘I first met him 1999 when I went over, we were part of the Universal group even when we did the talk show from Norwich…

‘When I actually moved over here, I had to shoot commercials… I was the only girl, so they all looked after me. Jerry was really, really sweet.

‘He always used to say to me, “Goddard, you care too much about people”, and I used to say, “Springer you don’t care enough”. Rather than a close friend, he was – God forbid you should lose any of your team.’

‘He was very different, he was very tongue and cheek and he saw that there was no end to the absurdities that human beings could get up to. We had very different approaches to talk shows, I should add.’

Springer was born in a London Underground station on February 13 1944, while it was being used as a bomb shelter, and his family – who had fled from Germany to England during the Holocaust – later settled in the Queens borough of New York City.

Springer, whose influential show ran in the US from 1991 until 2018, was married to Micki Velton, with whom he had a daughter, Katie, until their divorce in 1994.

The family asked that in lieu of flowers, people should make a donation or an act of kindness to someone in need, or a worthy advocacy organisation, in tribute to the way Springer signed off his talk shows with the phrase: ‘Take care of yourself, and each other.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV1.
