Denise Welch has declared she won’t be pledging allegiance to King Charles III during the monarch’s coronation this week.

The public has been invited to ‘cry out and swear allegiance’ to the King on Saturday, May 6, but the Loose Women presenter insisted she’d rather be backing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

During Monday’s episode of the daytime show, Denise was asked if she’d be joining in and replied: ‘What do you think? Listen, I’ve got nothing against the Royal Family.

‘However, of late, I am pledging allegiance, if any, to Harry and Meghan. Because of that, I won’t be pledging my allegiance. I don’t even know what you’re pledging for.

‘I am loyal and would pledge my allegiance to my family, and that’s all. I think it’s very outdated. I’m just not a fan of what’s going on at the moment… I wish them all the best in their king and queen-ness.’

Presenter Ruth Langsford took a quick poll of the studio audience with just one person putting their hand up to say they’ll be pledging allegiance.

Gloria Hunniford pointed out that the public is ‘not being made to do anything’, instead being invited to take part, and she noted that it’s not too dissimilar to singing the National Anthem.

‘So you’re singing out the allegiance in any fact,’ she said, adding that it will likely mainly be ‘older people’ who choose to do so this weekend.
