ITV is facing an Ofcom investigation after the watchdog reported receiving 4,000 complaints following Bridgerton actress Adjoa Andoh’s comments about the Royal Family during its coverage of the coronation.

It relates to remarks from the star, 60, who appeared as part of ITV1 commentary on May 6, saying: ‘Looking at all those young people, there is a bit of me that has gone from the rich diversity of the Abbey to the terribly white balcony, I’m very struck by that.’

The media watchdog confirmed it is the most complained about programme of 2023 so far.

A spokesperson for Ofcom said: ‘We are assessing the complaints against our broadcasting rules, before deciding whether or not to investigate.’

In recent years, Andoh, has become best-known for her portrayal of respected doyenne Lady Agatha Danbury in Bridgerton, a role she recently reprised for the prequel spin-off series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, set during the Regency era in London.

As the world watched the royal proceedings on Saturday, the actress was commentating on the day alongside several other presenters, including I’m A Celebrity… South Africa star Myleene Klass, 45.

At one point, the Doctor Who and Casualty star compared the sight of the royal family waving at the crowds from the famous balcony at the Palace to the guests who were in attendance at Westminster Abbey.

‘There is a bit of me that we’ve gone from the rich diversity of the Abbey to a terribly white balcony. I was very struck by that,’ she said.

Andoh continued: ‘I am also looking at those younger generations and thinking, “What are the nuances that they will inhabit as they grow?” Nuances that Charles has exhibited, from a teenager into early 20s young man.’

BBC bosses have since faced backlash too from annoyed listeners after a Radio 4 presenter reassured Andoh she ‘had nothing to apologise for’ with referring to her comments.

She had appeared on the station on Sunday to explain her comments after the reaction they caused online.

The Netflix series regular shared: ‘I think I upset a few people yesterday I was talking about the day and how marvellous it was and then looking at the balcony at the end.

‘And I suddenly went “ooh, it’s so white” – because the day had been so so mixed. I didn’t mean to upset anybody, I just was…’

She was interrupted by broadcaster Paddy O’Connell who said she need not ‘apologise’ and added: ‘You haven’t upset anyone.’
