Eurovision icon Conchita Wurst was in bits laughing as she learned of the bizarre fan theory that she and Rylan Clark are secretly the same person.

The Austrian performer, who won Eurovision in 2015 with her track Rise Like A Phoenix, is one of the true legends of the competition, and still absolutely loves it, calling Eurovision the ‘best time of the year.’

Someone else who is famously a Eurovision megafan and icon in their own right is former It Takes Two presenter Rylan, who this year is taking over the airwaves with commentary of both nights of the semi-finals.

It has previously been pointed out by fans that the duo look similar to each other, with their perfectly kept beards and, let’s face it, brilliant smiles.

Some fans are even convinced that the pair are secretly the same person – with the half-serious conspiracy theory persisting even after Rylan and Conchita have been photographed together.

Metro.co.uk met Conchita in the lead-up to the Eurovision 2023 Grand Final, and asked whether she and Rylan had met up at the competition so far – and whether she was aware of the conspiracy theories.

The star collapsed into laughter when she learned of the fan-favourite rumour, and, baffled, protested: ‘But we have been in the same room several times! I don’t know how that works.’

Sounds just like something someone pretending not to be Rylan would say…

She went on to heap praise on the BBC presenter, saying he was doing ‘an amazing job for the Eurovision community as a presenter and as a host, and we’re very happy to have him.’

The star is also seriously impressed by Liverpool, saying she is having the ‘best time’ in the ‘amazing’ city – even if she hadn’t been particularly aware of it before.

‘It’s beautiful, I’ve never been here, it’s my first time. And to be completely honest, I didn’t have it on the map! But it’s stunning, and the people are so friendly and the culture is so rich and the landscape is just beautiful,’ she said, adding she would ‘definitely be back.’

Conchita added that Liverpool is doing ‘a great job as the host city,’ with people behind the scenes ‘raving about how organised and well put-together’ everything is.

As Eurovision royalty, Conchita has plenty of her own army of loyal fans – with one in particular standing out to her: a woman from Australia who has a unique tribute to the star.

‘There is a girl in Australia who got a huge tattoo of my face on her arm – ha!’ Conchita laughs.

‘I’m not sure what to think of it to be honest, I mean I love it for her but you could have tattooed something … I don’t know! I meet her in person every time when I’m in Australia.’

It’s not just among fans Conchita is popular with but other Eurovision acts, as she revealed she has met several of this year’s contestants.

And while she hasn’t yet partied with them as she wants to be ‘fresh’ for the days become, she has a secret weapon in hand for whenever she gets the itch.

‘That’s the great thing – once you’ve won a Eurovision they will hardly say no when you say “Can we meet up?”‘

Conchita herself is a massive fan of UK acts Mae Muller, representing the country at this year’s show, as well as the 2022 hero Sam Ryder.

‘I think Mae is doing great. And the video? Money. Money production! It’s very very impressive. As for how she will perform live, I haven’t seen any of her live singing yet but I’m sure she is doing amazing.

‘And Sam? Just once more, what a talent. Incredible. And not just talented but also hard working. You feel he puts a lot of effort in his voice and technique and his music, and I mean he is selling out every venue he’s going to. Incredible.’

The icon clearly has a lot of love for the competition in her heart, particularly now as war rages in Europe, calling it a ‘real privilege’ to have the contest.

‘Especially the situation that we are in now in Ukraine, how lucky and privileged are we to live in freedom? Even more now, I realise we need to live every day to the fullest, be our authentic selves and live the most of our life because you only have one.

‘I know it’s a very Miss Universe answer but it is true!’

The 2023 Eurivision Grand Final airs Saturday at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
