Eurovision fans have been treated to plenty of throwbacks this week, but a performance from Sonia Evans has sparked a huge response.

Liverpudlian Sonia represented the United Kingdom at Eurovision in 1993 with her song Better the Devil You Know.

She was named runner-up, with her album of the same name also released that year and reaching number 32 in the UK.

The singer, 52, has now returned to the Eurovision stage in her home city, performing in the grand final as part an interval act called The Liverpool Songbook that saw songs linked to the city sung by a range of acts.

Hitting the stage to perform her hit song, Sonia was wearing a sparkly purple outfit and matching thigh high boots.

Accompanied on stage by dancers also rocking purple suits (sans shirts), the back of their jackets also featured the number 93 in a nod to Sonia’s previous appearance in the contest.

Clearly looking like she was having the time of her life, Sonia’s stage presence captured the attention of many people watching.

‘Absolutely living for the second coming of Sonia,’ one person posted on Twitter.

Before representing the UK at Eurovision, Sonia already had a UK number one hit under her belt (1989’s You’ll Never Stop Me Loving You) and had also been the first female UK artist to achieve five top 20 hit singles from one album.

The year after the contest she starred as Sandy in a West End revival of the musical Grease, while on television she appeared as Bunty in the 1998 BBC comedy series The Lily Savage Show.

Although it’s been 30 years since she released new music, this year Sonia’s unreleased fourth studio album, Love Train – The Philly Album, was finally available to fans.

When Liverpool was announced as the 2023 host city for Eurovision late last year, Sonia was spotted in the crowd cheering away.

Soon after many threw their support behind Sonia performing when the event rolled around.

One wrote on Twitter: ‘Petition for Sonia to do a halftime show like it’s the Super Bowl #Eurovision2023 #Liverpool.’
