The United Kingdom went into Eurovision 2023 with hopes, cautiously and uncharacteristically, high.

We had Sam Ryder’s out of this world performance in 2022 boosting our reputation, we had stepped up to host for Ukraine and we had a catchy little ditty from Mae Muller which, at the time of writing, has over 8.5 million streams on Spotify alone.

But those hopes were short-lived. Hot-favourite Loreen won for Sweden – becoming the first woman and second act in history to win Eurovision more than once – and that wasn’t surprising.

But what was slightly puzzling was the UK’s final score. Where did the UK come and how many points did we get?

How many points did Mae Muller get?

Despite going in confident – and getting the stadium on their feet – Mae Muller’s I Wrote a Song sadly didn’t rack up as many points as it will streams.

The United Kingdom ended the night with a grand total of… 24 points.

15 of those came from the jury vote and just nine points came from the public vote.

24 points was enough to keep the UK from the very bottom of the leaderboard though (we came 25th out of 26).

That honour went to Germany. Their band, Lord of the Lost, scored 18 points total with the track Blood & Glitter.

What’s the most points the United Kingdom has won?

The most points the UK has ever taken away from Eurovision was in 2022.

Sam Ryder’s Spaceman scored a staggering 466 points, and a second place finish, coming second only to Ukraine.

While Sam scored the most points, it’s important to remember the public vote only started in 1997. So any victories before that might’ve had a lower score, while still emerging victorious.

For example, 1997’s Love Shine a Light by Katrina and the Waves won the competition (our last time on top), with a total score of 227.

Before that, Bucks Fizz won with 136 points in 1981 with Making Your Mind Up.

And while Mae might be down about her low score, she actually did better than in recent years (excluding 2022).

In 2021, the UK went home with the infamous nul points, as James Newman received nothing from nobody.

In 2019, Michael Rice also finished dead last, with just 11 points.

So, it could’ve always been worse, Mae!
