I’m a fashion pro – the ‘jeans and a nice top combo’ is dead… there’s a new outfit formula in town

A FASHION pro has suggested that the classic combo of ‘jeans and a nice top’ is on the out – but not all are in favour of the new must-have outfit formula.

Jess took to TikTok to suggest that millennials are more focused on fun pants, often pairing printed jeans, cargos or leather trousers with a simple top to keep the attention on the bottom.

Instead, she suggested that millennial women are opting for a ‘fun pant’ with a basic tee or vest insteadTikTok/jessephora

But not all are in favour of the switch, with some suggesting the classic ‘jeans and a cute top’ is way more versatile.

Known online as @jessephora, the Pittsburgh-based content creator regularly shares fashion and styling tips with her 8,100 followers.

In a new reel, she said: “I’ve had a revelation in going-out fashion, specifically for us millennial women.

“And that is the old jeans and a cute top. A staple, a tried and true.

“Sometimes also known as jeans and a going-out top.

“The Gen Z replacements are a top… and fun pants.

“And I know this because I texted my very cool Gen Z friend today and I asked her what she’s wearing out tonight.

“She said, ‘I usually just do a fun pants and a tank top’.

“And I thought about it, I was like, ‘damn, she really is always wearing fun pants and a tank top’.

“Here’s the issue. Fun pants are not in my repertoire.

“They are not in the repertoire of millennial women.

“We were not wearing fun pants. We were wearing going-out tops. The party was up top.

“I literally went back in my texts and photos just to relive the glory days of jeans and a cute top.

“Like look, 2015. ‘What are you gonna wear?’ ‘Jeans and a cute top prob.’

“Back even further, 2012. ‘What are you wearing?’ ‘Jeans and a cute-ish shirt’.

“Here’s the pics to prove it… 2013. Look at these, cute tops and jeans.”

Sharing another photo from her personal Instagram, she added: “This was like 2014. Jeans and cute tops.

“There was not a fun pant to be seen.

“So I went to my closet for tonight and I found these black leather pants and they have little imprinted flowers. That’s fun.

“Anyways, RIP to the jeans and a cute top.

“It had a great run, it really did.

“But it’s the season of the fun pants, apparently.”

Her revelation attracted plenty of attention online, with the video gaining more than 233,800 likes and 2.2 million views.

In the comments, fashion fans shared their reactions, with one writing: “Is this why I can’t find cute tops anymore?”

“OKAY BUT WHAT ARE THE FUN PANTS,” questioned another.

A third added: “We did have fun pants…. They were mint green skinny jeans and it was horrific.”

Someone else put: “Ohhhhh THIS is where I’m a millennial with some gen z isms. I love me some fun pants.”

Not all were in favour of the move to ‘fun pants’, with another adding: “No I’m not here for fun pants I like can’t bring myself to do it.”

Jess replied: “I also feel like it’s less versatile? Like you can wear a going out top in various ways but a fun pant is too memorable to wear often?”
