Emotional Harrison Ford looks tearful during 5-minute standing ovation for Indiana Jones 5 at Cannes Film Festival-Rebecca Sayce-Entertainment – Metro

Harrison Ford appeared teary-eyed during the premiere of Indiana Jones 5 at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

The eagerly-anticipated fifth film in the franchise, the Dial of Destiny, sees Ford, 80, don his iconic hat once more in the titular lead role, alongside Mads Mikkelson, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Antonio Banderas.

The film received its world premiere at this year’s 76th Cannes Film Festival, but before it even began rolling, fans showered their appreciation on the actor as a compilation of his best-loved roles from across his career were shown, including clips from Star Wars, The Fugitive, and the previous Indiana Jones films.

It was a special evening for more than one reason for the star, who received an honorary Palme d’Or at the French festival.

‘I’m very moved by this,’ Ford told the audience, as per Variety. ‘They say when you’re about to die, you see your life flash before your eyes, and I just saw my life flash before my eyes. A great part of my life, but not all of my life.’

He went on to pay tribute to his wife, who ‘supported [his] passion and [his] dreams,’ before addressing the audience.

‘I love you, too. But I’ve got a movie you ought to see. It’s right behind me.

‘So let me get out of the way, and thank you again for this great honour.’

After the film premiered, Ford looked noticeably moved as he and the rest of the cast and crew received the long standing ovation from the crowd.

Choked up, Ford seemed to deliver an emotional goodbye to the character that he first portrayed in 1981.

‘This is it. I will not fall down for you again. But thank you so much,’ he said, before once again thanking the fans of the film for aiding in the success of the franchise.

He said: ‘Indiana Jones movies are about fantasy and mystery, but they’re also about heart.

‘We have a really great story to tell, as well as a movie that will kick your ass.

‘Thank you for making these films such an incredible experience for all of us.’

He went on to show his appreciation for Fleabag star Waller-Bridge, 37, pointing at her while telling the crowd ‘I’m very proud to say that this one [film] is fantastic and this [Waller-Bridge] is one of the reasons.’

The Dial of Destiny marks the first Indiana Jones film that has not been helmed by Steven Spielberg, who instead served as executive producer.

Plot details for the action-packed blockbuster have been kept tightly under wraps, but it has been claimed that Harrison will be ‘de-aged’ in scenes.

A synopsis for the film reads: ‘Daredevil archaeologist Indiana Jones races against time to retrieve a legendary dial that can change the course of history. Accompanied by his goddaughter, he soon finds himself squaring off against Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi who works for NASA.’

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is set to arrive in UK cinemas on June 28 2023.
