The Smiths bassist Andy Rourke has died at the age of 59.

The late musician’s death was announced by his bandmate and guitarist of the group Johnny Marr, who released a statement on Twitter.

‘It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andy Rourke after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer,’ Marr, 59, wrote.

‘Andy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by those who knew him and as a supremely gifted musician by music fans. We request privacy at this sad time.’

Fans of the Manchester-based rock band rushed to send their condolences to the group and to share their sadness over Rourke’s death.

‘Very sad. His bass playing was as distinctive as Johnny’s guitar playing or Morrisey’s voice,’ one person tweeted, while another wrote: ‘Terribly sad news. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Will always be remembered as an integral part of one the greatest bands of all time. Rest in peace.’

One fan penned in tribute: ‘Thoughts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of Andy. His music and legacy will live on. 🖤.’

Another said: ‘Heartbreaking, so sorry to hear that. One of the most underrated musicians of all time.’
