George Logan, best known for playing the character Dr Evadne Hinge in drag as part of the Hinge and Bracket comedy and musical act, has died at the age of 78.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the entertainment act – which also consisted of Patrick Fyffe as Dame Hilda Bracket – became well-known from their performances on BBC radio and TV programmes.

They also performed for members of the royal family on several occasions, including at two Royal Variety shows.

Logan’s death was confirmed by his family on Sunday May 21.

Fyffe died in 2002 at the age of 60, after being diagnosed with colon cancer.

Logan and Fyffe debuted their drag routine in 1974 to critical acclaim, when they launched their act at Edinburgh Festival.

Hinge and Bracket depicted two eccentric old ladies, who frequently performed comedic musical routines.

In addition to performing at famous venues such as the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, they also appeared in TV programmes such as BBC’s The Good Old Days and Dear Ladies with Gyles Brandreth.

The pair starred in a West End adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, and they were said to have been a particular favourite of the Queen Mother.

Tributes have poured in for Logan following the news of his death, with comedy writer and performer Julian Dutton tweeting: ‘RIP George Logan, Evadne Hinge of Hinge & Bracket.

‘What a fine act, so redolent of those gentlewomen in Ealing comedies who resided in shabby-genteel hotels. With Paul O’Grady and Barry Humphries gone, drag-with-character has lost another wonderful artiste.’

Screenwriter Gareth Roberts stated: ‘Farewell, George Logan aka Dr Evadne Hinge. Such great fun, and author of an incredibly filthy memoir.’

Someone who met Logan shared: ‘How sad to hear that George Logan, aka Dr Evadne Hinge of Hinge & Bracket, has left us. I worked with him very briefly at one of those fund raising thingies in the nineties. He was so kind to everyone and clearly adored. Sleep well, George x.’

A fan penned in tribute: ‘So sad. Saw Hinge & Bracket perform at Richmond Theatre some considerable years ago now. Very entertaining, especially when they sang The Cat Duet. RIP George Logan.’

Another person wrote: ‘I was tremendously fond of Hinge and Bracket, in their day (which I suppose was something like 1925?). We must trust that George Logan is now reunited at the piano with Patrick Fyffe.’
