The BBC has responded to complaints made by viewers during the broadcaster’s coverage of the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Of the millions watching at home, several were affected by disruption to the coverage depending on whether they watched on TV or on iPlayer.

The disruption caused some viewers to abandon the BBC’s coverage altogether, switching over ITV instead of waiting for the BBC’s live feed to come back.

Britain’s leading broadcaster was also criticised for ‘terrible’ audio quality, which viewers described as ‘muffled’ as it intermittently cut out completely.

Some fans of the Royal Family were left demanding an on-screen apology as the historic event took place at Westminster Abbey and Windsor Castle.

Two weeks on from the coronation, the BBC has now responded, issuing an apology and saying they will attempt to prevent the issues from happening again.

The statement read: ‘We received complaints from viewers who were unhappy with the sound quality during The Coronation of Their Majesties the King and Queen Camilla.’

‘We apologise for the intermittent sound drop out during the coverage. This was due to a complex technical error which affected some viewers – depending on how they were watching.’

The statement concluded with a promise to viewers: ‘We are taking steps to ensure this doesn’t happen again in any future coverage or broadcasts.’

The BBC also responded after 4,000 complaints were made by viewers when Bridgerton actress Adjoa Andoh described the Royal Family as ‘terribly white’.

Andoh, 60, said: ‘Looking at all those young people, there is a bit of me that has gone from the rich diversity of the Abbey to the terribly white balcony, I’m very struck by that.’

The BBC responded by saying: ‘While discussing coverage of the Coronation during our news review, Adjoa Andoh explained the context of a comment she had made the previous day, while appearing on ITV’s coverage of the event.

‘We realise Ms Andoh’s remark had provoked a debate, which is why she chose to address it.’

Across the BBC, ITV, and Sky News, a peak of 18.8 million people tuned in to see the coronation, with 13.4 choosing to go with the BBC.

The coverage on the BBC over the celebratory coronation weekend, led by Huw Edwards, also maintained an average audience of 11.9 million people.

So far this year, the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla has been the most-watched event of 2023, and is likely to keep that honour.
