Dannii Minogue has shared how she was brutally compared to her sister when the pair first found fame in the UK.

The 51-year-old singer, presenter and actress has been a familiar face on British TV since the early 90s but Dannii has confessed that nasty comments made her doubt if it was ‘worth it’.

The success of big sister Kylie Minogue – who became a household name with hits like I Should Be So Lucky and Spinning Around after starring as Charlene in Neighbours – brought an onslaught of unfair criticism and comparison Dannii’s way.

‘There was a lot of time when I first came to the UK when it was like, I was the brunt of the joke for a lot of people – ‘Kylie’s better, you are the fat ugly sister of Kylie, not as successful,’ and whatever,’ she said on the Reign with Josh Smith podcast.

‘It was really harsh, the headlines that were written back then. I’ve had friends that have really battled with their body and their weight and their confidence.

‘The stuff that was written about me, if you weren’t strong, those journalists would have blood on their hands because it was horrific.

‘It never completely crushed me, but I thought is this honestly worth it? I just wanna sing songs. I wanna do the stuff that I’ve always done, but honestly, if it’s this hard, maybe it’s just time to give this up.’

Dannii rose to prominence on Australian soap Home and Away in the 90s as tomboy Emma Jackson, a fan favourite, before moving onto the music scene with her debut single Love and Kisses peaking at number eight in the UK.

She continued to release music throughout the 90s and 00s, with five studio albums, eight compilation albums, and numerous chart hits.

Her extensive pop career landed her a position as a judge on singing competition The X Factor, launching her as a bonafide TV personality and household name.

Despite her own successes, the comparisons to Kylie continued and at times the abuse was so bad she would break down crying on set of The X Factor, hitting ‘rock bottom’ and feeling like ‘a punching bag’ for the press.

Now, the pop star is using her voice to support the LGBTQ+ community, which she has been a long time ally for, with new single and dating show I Kissed a Boy.

‘Honestly, I didn’t think I’d still be going, we’ve come a long way since then and there have been an amazing amount of people that have supported me through all of that,’ she shared.

‘It’s amazing to have Kylie because she knows what it is like to be upfront when there is a lot going on underneath and behind the scenes. So I could really bounce off her in a way I couldn’t with the rest of my family who don’t know what it feels like until you are there.’

The I Kissed a Boy host added: ‘It’s been a long journey of finding my voice for me. Don’t find it for anyone else. Find it for you. Be happy with that for yourself. And that gives you great strength.’
