Tina Turner has died at the age of 83.

The singer was most known for hits including The Best and Proud Mary, and boasted a music career spanning six decades.

Her publicist confirmed the news of her death to PA, explaining that she suffered a long illness.

In a statement, they said: ‘Tina Turner, the “Queen of Rock’n Roll” has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.

‘With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model.’

Her cause of death has not yet been shared.

The Tennessee-born musician, real name Anna Mae Bullock, often sang in the choir at her church as a child.

She started out her own career after seeing Ike Turner perform in local clubs, and became one of the backing singers for his group, The Kings of Rhythm.

After impressing crowds, she fronted the band and they went on to release songs including Fool in Love and It’s Gonna Work Out Fine in the early 1960s.
