People have expressed their disgust and outrage after a decorative urn was stolen from the grave site of Dame Vivienne Westwood.

The legendary fashion designer died in December at the age of 81 after a long and influential career that saw her spearhead many British subcultures.

Following her death, a grave plot was established in the Derbyshire village of Tintwistle, and was maintained regularly by florists local to the area.

However, on Sunday, one of the florists, Anja Norris, arrived to care for the plot, only to find that a large decorative urn had been stolen from the site.

Anja, who runs the florist service from nearby village Glossop, expressed her disgust and hoped that the urn would soon be returned to its rightful place.

‘It’s just so disrespectful, I hope they bring it back,’ she told the BBC.

The alleged theft is reported to have taken place at some point in the last two weeks.

On a local community Facebook page, a statement was posted, condemning the robbers and asking residents to be vigilant and ‘keep their eyes open.’

‘This is a message to whoever has “borrowed” the heavy urn from Dame Vivienne Westwood’s grave in Tintwistle,’ the opening line read.

‘We don’t understand what makes you think that it is acceptable to remove such items from a grave, but we assume your need for an urn must have been great.’

It continued: ‘Regardless of this, to avoid causing further distress to the family and people who enjoy visiting the graveside, we ask you to return it.’

‘There will be no questions asked and you are welcome to simply return it back to its original place or drop it off [at Anja Norris’ florist in Glossop].’

It is not thought that the police have been contacted about the matter, with the local community seemingly offering the offender a chance to redeem themselves.

Speaking of the incident, Anja said: ‘I can’t get my head around it, the grave is very popular with people – those in the village like to visit it to pay their respects.’

Dame Vivienne’s memorial service earlier this year attracted famous faces from many industries, including fashion, music, and the performing arts.
