Ted Lasso fans lock horns over Ted and Rebecca ending in season 3 finale: ‘I love this show but what the hell’-Sabrina Barr-Entertainment – Metro

Warning: spoilers ahead for the Ted Lasso season 3 finale.

It’s the end of an era. Ted Lasso, one of TV’s most heartwarming shows, has come to an end, and fans are devastated to say goodbye while cherishing the message to always ‘believe’.

While viewers may hope that there could be more of the Apple TV Plus series in store with Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein and Juno Temple, the season 3 finale wrapped up its last episode in what seemed to be a definitive manner.

However, the ending concerning two characters in particular – Ted (Jason) and Rebecca Welton (Hannah) – has sparked heated debates among the fandom, with some loving how their relationship was concluded and others seething by the direction of the plot.

Ever since the widely-acclaimed sports comedy-drama premiered in 2020, some viewers have shipped for Ted and Rebecca to get together, particularly considering they were both left grappling in the aftermath of relationship breakdowns.

Others preferred them to remain as platonic friends, stressing that being a ‘soulmate’ doesn’t have to be a romantic relationship.

In the final episode of the third season, there’s one moment when it appears as though Ted’s spent the night at Rebecca’s home, as he makes his way to the kitchen looking extremely dishevelled.

It quickly transpires that Ted, Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) and Beard’s partner Jane (Phoebe Walsh) all stayed over because of a gas leak in the neighbourhood, putting a stopper to any speculation that Ted and Rebecca had a romantic tryst.

Later on, Rebecca tries to convince Ted to stay in the UK, after he expresses his desire to return to the US to be with his son and ex-wife.

She urges Ted to stay, emphasising that his home could be Richmond… but in the end the beloved football coach sticks to his plan and makes his way back across the pond.

Some fans felt incredibly frustrated that there was seemingly no allusion to Ted and Rebecca being soulmates, whether romantically or platonically.

‘Ted going back and being away from all the people who love him, Ted and Beard getting separated, Ted and Rebecca never finding out they’re soulmates…. I love this show but what the hell,’ one person tweeted.

Addressing the scene where Ted appeared at Rebecca’s house, another wrote: ‘The fakeout of Ted and Rebecca felt so unnecessary and a slap for what? Baiting your audiences who ship the two main characters to a point where you don’t have any intention of delivering said ship? They could have said, no they won’t happen but dragged this for 3 seasons.’

Someone else remarked: ‘What’s baffling to me is that after all that talk from the cast about Ted and Rebecca being soulmates (in whatever sense of the word) they don’t even acknowledge that on screen, they barely even interacted on screen anymore. So? For what?’

However, others hit back at the suggestion that Ted and Rebecca should have ended up together, with one stressing that they ‘never had any romantic chemistry’, but developed a ‘beautiful friendship’.

‘If you were expecting or hoping Ted and Rebecca would get together, you completely misunderstood this show,’ one person stated, as another added: ‘Ted & Rebecca were never meant to be together. We need to stop expecting the two single, male & female leads to always fall in love. This show was never a romantic comedy. It’s about love & friendship & being human. Everything ended up exactly as it should be.’

Overall, many viewers were left in tears by the final episode, with one person describing it as a ‘perfect ending’.

‘#TedLasso will end up being one of the best sports shows ever and the best show up about dealing with Mental Health, Anxiety and every day things so many people go through. A beautiful show, with a perfect ending,’ one person stated.

‘Ted Lasso is one of the greatest television shows of all time. You are doing yourself a complete disservice if you haven’t watched it. Incredible stories, characters, and perfect ending. AFC Richmond forever,’ another wrote.
