ITV has referenced the bombshell tell-all interviews given by former This Morning host Phillip Schofield live on air.

Last month the long-time presenter of the flagship breakfast programme first resigned from the show and then the network after sharing he’d had an ‘unwise but not illegal’ affair with a much younger colleague.

Admitting he had lied about the nature of the relationship to his bosses and colleagues, ITV later released a statement saying it was ‘deeply disappointed by the admissions of deceit’.

On the first episode after his exit, hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary paid tribute to Schofield, but ITV’s breakfast programmes have not appeared to address it since the revelations about the affair.

Now, a week later, ITV has played clips of his interview with The Sun during an episode of Lorraine.

On Friday’s episode of the show, a clip was shown where Schofield apologised.

‘I absolutely know, there is no question, I did a bad thing,’ he said.

‘I know I did that and there’s no excuse, I don’t have an excuse and I won’t put forward an excuse.

‘To everybody, to every single person, I am deeply sorry and I apologise to you because I should have known better.’

Host Ranvir Singh then said: ‘Phillip Schofield there, speaking publicly for the first time since leaving ITV over the affair he had with a younger colleague.’

She added: ‘In two separate interviews, one with The Sun and the other with the BBC, Phillip said he was “broken and ashamed” that his career in television was over.’

Last weekend ITV said an investigation into the relationship was conducted in 2020, but no evidence of a relationship was found ‘beyond hearsay and rumour’.

‘Both parties were questioned and both categorically and repeatedly denied the rumours as did Phillip’s then agency YMU, it said.

‘In addition, ITV spoke to a number of people who worked on This Morning and were not provided with, and did not find, any evidence of a relationship beyond hearsay and rumour.’

Earlier this week ITV chief executive Dame Carolyn McCall said the channel had instructed a barrister to conduct an external review of the facts surrounding Schofield’s exit, the findings of which will be made public.

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV1.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1.
