Britain’s Got Talent 2023 has been a cracking series, with singers, dance acts, comedians, magicians and all manner of other performers lining up in their bid to impress the judges.

But all good things must come to an end, and Sunday night (June 4) will see this year’s champion crowned in the grand final.

The show will see 10 acts who have qualified from the live semi-finals, along with a wild card act chosen by the judges, competing for their chance to join the Britain’s Got Talent hall of fame. Dancer Musa Motha, comedian Viggo Venn, teenage opera singer Malakai Bayoh, teen magician Cillian O’Connor and dance troupe Ghetto Boys are among those hoping to take the crown.

The series has of course gone on to make stars of many of its acts, with the likes of Diversity, Susan Boyle, Ashleigh and Pudsey, Collabro and Richard Jones all going on to great things since they first appeared.

But who is the show’s reigning champion? And what prize awaits the winner of this year’s series?

Who won Britain’s Got Talent 2022?

Last year’s BGT winner was Axel Blake, a comedian from West London.

The former property maintenance manager made it through to the live shows after receiving the Golden Buzzer from judge Simon Cowell.

He won in a tense grand final last June, which saw him fight off competition from fellow hopefuls Maxwell Thorpe, Jamie Leahey, Ben Nickless, Flintz and T4ylor, Tom Ball, Eva Abley, Loren Allred, 5 Star Boys, and Aneeshwar Kunchala.

Axel was left a little lost for words after Ant and Dec announced his name, saying: ‘I’m shaking, thank you everyone for voting for me… I can’t believe it.’

The comedian’s win caused a little controversy, after viewers learned that he had a comedy special show on Amazon’s streaming service after it was filmed at his 2018 headline show, I’m Not Gonna Lie, at The Indigo at the O2 Arena.

However Axel has addressed the issue, telling Metro.co.uk last year: ‘They don’t know my history and whatnot, so I ignored that, focused, it wasn’t someone had put my special online for me, it wasn’t like me and Amazon had a deal and a contract and loads of money, it didn’t work like that, so it was just up there for a few years on a lease and that was it.

‘But apparently no one can go on BGT with experience!’

Axel is on tour across the UK in April, as well as playing two dates at London’s Leicester Square Theatre on May 7 and 15.

What does the winner of Britain’s Got Talent get?

The winner of Britain’s Got Talent gets themselves a £250,000 prize, as well as a slot on the bill at this year’s Royal Variety Performance, due to take place in November.

The annual variety show raises money for the Royal Variety Charity, and senior members of the Royal Family traditionally attend – the 2022 show, for example, was attended by the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Edward and his wife Sophie.

The prize hasn’t changed much since the show began in 2007, with the Royal Variety Performance slot having been up for grabs since the first series.

When the show started, the first-place winner was handed a cheque for £100,000.

In 2012, that prize money reached a record-high of £500,000 but, for the last few seasons, it has been £250,000.

The Britain’s Got Talent grand final is on ITV on Sunday night from 7.30pm.
