The Have I Got News For You team could not resist making several gags about Holly Willoughby and the This Morning saga.

On Monday, the Wylde Moon founder returned to the ITV daytime show for the first time since Phillip Schofield admitted to an ‘unwise but not illegal’ affair with a younger runner.

In a widely-mocked speech to audiences, Holly, 42, began: ‘Firstly, are you ok?’

‘It feels very strange indeed sitting here without Phil,’ she continued. ‘And I imagine you have been feeling a lot like I have: shaken, troubled, let down.’

Before HIGNFY had even started, a clip from Holly’s address, in which she said ‘deep breath’ was aired, before it cut to the guest host, Harry Hill, following her instructions and taking a sharp inhale of breath.

But the jokes didn’t end there, with the comedian, 58, discussing a new Apple AI headset that allows its users to live in a ‘mixed reality’ and quipping: ‘I guess like Holly Willoughby does.’

Later on in the episode, the panel directly addressed the This Morning saga and Phillip’s immediate departure from ITV after confessing to the romance.

After replaying Holly’s speech in full, Ian Hislop commented: ‘Her tone of voice suggested that Phil Schofield and everyone he knew had all been murdered by terrorists.’

‘Did you feel let down, Ian?’ Paul Merton asked, referencing Holly’s choice of words.

‘Hi there, good morning. Josie, thank you for being here. Right, deep breath. Firstly, are you ok? I hope so. It feels very strange indeed sitting here without Phil.

‘I imagine that you might have been feeling a lot like I have – shaken, troubled, let down, worried for the wellbeing of people on all sides of what’s been going on and full of questions.

‘You me and all of us at This Morning gave our love and support to someone who was not telling the truth, who acted in a way that they themselves felt that they had to resign from ITV and step down from a career that they loved. That is a lot to process, and it’s equally hard to see the toll that it’s taken on their own mental health.

‘I think what unites us all now is a desire to heal, for the health and wellbeing of everyone.

‘I hope that we start this new chapter and get back to a place of warmth and magic that this show holds for all of us, we can find strength in each other.

‘From my heart, can I just say thank you for all of your kind messages and thank you for being here this morning. Myself, Josie, Dermot, Alison, Craig and every single person that works on this show will continue to work hard every single day to bring you this show that we love.’

‘I was just wondering if that was a cocktail: shaken, let down,’ Ian joked. ‘I think the audience doesn’t feel anything except, well, “This is quite interesting, unlike the show normally”.’

Holly also appeared in Have I Got News For You’s picture round, in which the guest have to find the odd one out.

Explaining why the Dancing On Ice presenter was the correct answer, Harry explained: ‘They’ve all been upset by something they’ve seen on the telly apart from Holly Willoughby who made a special statement about it and how upset she was on the telly.

‘After everyone else had said their piece, it took Holly Willoughby more than a week to take a statement. Not like her to be the last in the queue.’

Harry was referring to the backlash Holly and Phil faced after claims they ‘jumped’ the line to see the late Queen lying in state for a segment on This Morning.

Since her statement on This Morning, Holly has not spoken about Phillip, who revealed in a series of emotional interviews they had not spoken since the affair was made public.

However, she has shared a series of cryptic social media posts including one about ‘talking to a friend’ and another about ‘coincidences’ and ‘secret messages.’

Have I Got News For You continues on Friday at 9pm on BBC One.
