If Sony does have more PlayStation announcements planned for this year, it won’t be making them at Gamescom in August.

Many found Sony’s latest PlayStation showcase to be incredibly underwhelming given the lack of big name titles and first-party exclusives.

It’s even been suggested that Sony deliberately withheld trailers for some reason, sparking theories of a second showcase later in the year.

At the very least, you can rule out seeing any new PlayStation announcements at this year’s Gamescom as Sony has said it once again won’t be attending the event.

This marks the third time in a row that Sony has opted to skip Gamescom, having not shown up for either of the 2021 or 2022 events.

If Sony does indeed have more announcements to make, this at least rules out any of them appearing during the Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase on August 22 and means the publisher would rather handle them on its own terms.

That said, it did make the baffling decision to hold off sharing a launch date and pre-order details for Spider-Man 2 until Summer Game Fest rather than share them at its own showcase.

Whether it will hold a second showcase remains to be seen, with Sony only telling German outlet GamesMarkt that it has no plans to hold an exhibit during Gamescom’s run this August.

While there are still a handful of one-off showcases this month from the likes of Microsoft and Ubisoft, Gamescom 2023 is the next major gaming event that’ll involve multiple publishers and developers.

Surprisingly, Nintendo will be making an appearance for the first time in four years, which has some fans thinking it’ll use the event to announce the long-rumoured Nintendo Switch 2 or at least unveil some new games.

Nintendo’s line-up for the rest of 2023 is awfully slim, with the only first-party titles on the schedule being Pikmin 4 and Everybody-1-2-Switch; both of which will be out long before Gamescom kicks off.
