Ubisoft kicked off the Summer Game Fest with a major surprise: a brand new Prince Of Persia by the makers of Rayman Legends.

What exactly has happened to the Prince Of Prince: The Sands Of Time remake is still unclear but Ubisoft has announced a brand new game instead, although it’s not a 3D title and doesn’t have you playing as the Prince at all.

The Lost Crown was the first game to be unveiled at the Summer Game Fest and seems to be attempting to combine the 2D elements of the very earliest games with the aesthetic of The Sands Of Time.

That’s what we got from watching the trailer, but Ubisoft actually describes it as being ‘inspired by the Metroidvania structure,’ and reveals you play as a young warrior named Sargon who is trying to find Prince Ghassan, who has disappeared.

Time powers will feature in the game, although it’s not yet been revealed how they work. However, puzzle solving, secrets, and ‘exciting side quests’ are also promised, as well as just combat.

The various monsters are based on real Pesian myths, such as the manticore you can see in the boss battle from the trailer; plus, the soundtrack is by Iranian composer Mentrix.

Ubisoft is obviously going for a degree of authenticity but as many have already pointed out, the trailer almost makes it seem as if Sargon has time travelled from the modern day, based on his attitude and dialogue.

It certainly seems odd that one of the most common complaints about the post-Sands Of Time sequels is that they made the Prince too angry and unlikeable, and yet this new character seems to be acting in exactly the same way.

Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown is being developed by Ubisoft Montpellier, who are best known for the Rayman franchise and Beyond Good & Evil.

It’ll launch on January 18, 2024 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Amazon Luna.
