Move aside Jon Snow, Sam Fender truly is the King of the North.

The 29-year-old Hypersonic Missiles singer had his first of two gigs in the historic Toon ground of St James’ Park last night, and let’s just say the city was buzzing.

The North Shields-born star – who wore a vintage Newcastle football top for the gig – will perform a second show in the stadium tonight, much to the delight of his devoted Geordie fanbase.

And it appears none were more enthusiastic than Newcastle’s so-called ‘dads gone wild’, one of which enjoyed the star’s hit Seventeen Going Under from the shoulders of his grinning pal.

The man can be seen pumping his fist in the air to the song before whapping out a spirited air guitar, and Twitter users were loving the scenes, as one person commented: ‘Absolutely brilliant.’

‘Seeing that has really made me smile xxx,’ said another, while someone else said: ‘Brilliant, go on man!!’

I was at Spike Island 1990, Knebworth 1996, but the atmosphere at SJP for Sam Fender last night was the greatest ever at a gig. Unbelievable. pic.twitter.com/7ohKc2bxNc

Elsewhere, concert-goers took to social media to show their appreciation during and following the epic night.

One person said it was the first time they’d ‘seen a tear from [their] dad before’ when Sam made his entrance.

With the highest praise ever, another emotional fan said: ‘I was at Spike Island 1990, Knebworth 1996, but the atmosphere at SJP for Sam Fender last night was the greatest ever at a gig. Unbelievable.’

Meanwhile, even local businesses jumped on the hype as Newcastle-born beloved bakery Greggs had a total rebrand and hosted their first ever live music party to get fans pumped for the Geordie legend’s gig.

A ‘Greggs Unplugged’ sign could be seen covering the chain’s Grainger Street site, and its website described it as a ‘dive bar’ with ‘intimate performances’ as well as – of course – their staple dishes, which included the famous sausage roll.

Anyone else got goosebumps?

All across the sold-out stadium, 52,000 ecstatic fans could be seen donning The Toon’s iconic black and white football strip on the Magpies’ home turf, while others waved flags high.

This is the Newcastle supporter’s first ever gig at the stadium, and it was a big moment for the city as Metro stations were closed in preparation for the event.

At one point, Sam admitted the idea of playing in St James’ Park was somewhat of a ‘joke’ for the band.

Sam entered the stage to the tune of Local Hero, and the crowds were reported to have chanted, ‘Toon, Toon, Black and White Army,’ throughout the night.

The Spit Of You singer also covered Bruce Springsteen’s I’m On Fire, and his two-night run in the stadium mimics his idol’s two consecutive performances at the venue back in 1985.

The Newcastle legend is set to perform tonight, his support acts include Holly Humberstone.
