Michael Fassbender has crashed out of 24 Hours of Le Mans after losing control of his Porsche and hitting a tyre barrier.

The legendary endurance race in France is something the X-Men star had been preparing for intensively over the last three years, after developing a passion for racing.

After entering the endurance race on Saturday (June 10), Michael had 18 minutes left to complete his six-hour stint when he hit the barrier on Sunday morning.

His team Proton Competition confirmed his exit from the competition on Twitter, writing: ‘We are gutted! Car #911 is no longer running the Le Mans 24 race.

‘Few minutes before the end of his stint #MichaelFassbender lost control of the car and went into the barrier with no chances to repair the damage. Le Mans was no(t) kind to us this year!’

X-Men: First Class star Michael, 46, was part of a team that includes Estonian driver Martin Rump and Austrian professional Richard Lietz.

Speaking ahead of what he considered a career highlight, Michael said: ‘It’s always been a dream of mine to contest the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the thing with dreams is you don’t think about how much work you’ve invested or how many setbacks you’ve had to face.

‘I not only learned what it takes to contest a race weekend but also how to be competitive. It’s giving me a fascinating opportunity to show my full potential.’

He added: ‘It could be a one-off chance, so I simply want to do my best.’

Michael is no stranger to the racing track. He made his Porsche debut in 2019 when he raced in the Porsche Sports Cup Germany as well as racing at the Rally of the Lakes in Killarney, Ireland, to celebrate the event’s 40th anniversary.
