Jonnie Irwin has spoken candidly about the conversations he’s having with his son as he gears up to spend what will likely be his last Father’s Day with his family.

The TV star, 49, revealed in November 2022 that he could have ‘months to live’ after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, with the disease having spread from his lung to his brain.

Jonnie – who shares Rex, four, and two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac with his wife Jess – has revealed he’s now having private conversations with Rex about his future and even touched upon how his wife will parent in his absence.

‘I’ve started to tell Rex in private conversations, “You can do anything,”’ Jonnie said in a new interview.

‘He’s bright, he’s talented, and comes home from nursery knowing more French than I do,’ doting dad Jonnie added to HELLO!.

Jonnie also poignantly noted: ‘Jess is soft, so they’ll have a softer upbringing than if I was around, probably.’

Elsewhere in his raw interview, the TV star revealed that a procedure he’d had as part of his cancer treatment caused irreversible damage to his liver.

According to MailOnline, Jonnie called the procedure’s results a ‘cruel blow’ while explaining that he’d recently gone to Turkey for treatment.

‘It’s blocked in a place they can’t operate on, so there’s no point fighting the cancer elsewhere if the liver’s not working. It’s a cruel blow,’ he said.

Since publicly announcing his diagnosis, Jonnie’s been showered in support when sharing health updates on social media.

In a recent update, Jonnie joked that he ‘must have looked a right state’ while running for a train.

Alongside a selfie, he quipped on social media: ‘Must’ve looked a right state- crazed and panicked Chemo boy dragging a wheeled case with a strange transparent shoulder bag falling down his arm and a hot crossed bun hanging from the side of his mouth attempting to run for the departing train. Thankfully the kind guardsman held the door at the far end.

‘My penance was that my seat was at the opposite end so I had to walk past all the passengers who had viewed this spectacle.’
