PS5 exclusives will never be released day one on PS Plus confirms Sony-GameCentral-Entertainment – Metro

Sony has revealed that PS Plus Premium is more popular than Extra and that cloud gaming is currently being tested for PS5 consoles.

Despite reports that the market for Game Pass is already reaching its limit, Microsoft still made it a major focus of their Xbox Games Showcase at the weekend – with all new first party titles, and a number of others, appearing on the service from day one.

Sony has yet to respond to the showcase but a new interview with Nick Maguire, PlayStation’s global head of subscriptions, reveals the company has no intention of copying Xbox’s approach to subscriptions.

‘We’re happy with our strategy,’ says Maguire. ‘For us, that’s working. Occasionally, there will be an opportunity to invest in a day-and-date like Stray and we will jump on those when they come in. But for us, letting those [first party] games go out to the platform outside the service first… that’s working and that will continue to be our strategy moving forward.’

This is despite the fact that first party games are the most popular on PS Plus, with Maguire revealing that Ghost Of Tsushima has ‘brought in the highest number of hours of gameplay.’

‘That goes to the strength of our PS Studios titles, which have seen great engagement and lots of excitement, he said.

‘Four of the top 10 over the year have been PS Studios titles, whether that’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West and even Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, which only joined recently – that’s climbing very quickly and growing month-on-month. These exclusive titles are really what’s resonating. It’s bringing people in,’ he told GamesIndustry.biz.

Although the revamp of PS Plus initially seemed to result in a decrease in subscriptions that was later reversed and according to Maguire people are now spending, on average, seven times longer on PS Plus then they did with streaming service PlayStation Now.

‘We’re pretty confident that’s down to the quality of diversity that we’re putting into the game portfolio,’ he said.

Maguire was non-committal on whether PS Plus could be extended to the PC, as is already the case with PC, although that does seem inevitable eventually.

Perhaps the most surprising comment though is that PS Premium has proven more popular than Extra, despite Premium being more expensive and being roundly criticised for its paltry collection of classic titles.

‘We all thought that Extra would be where the majority of people went to first, but actually Premium has been more popular and bigger,’ said Maguire.

He also revealed that Sony is currently testing cloud streaming for PlayStation 5 games, which will eventually be made available via PS Plus Premium.

He didn’t offer any time frame for when that would happen though and made no mention of the Project Q portable – just that streaming would only be fore PlayStation 5 consoles at first.

‘I don’t think anything has told us we need to change course,’ he said in regards to PS Plus as a whole. ‘It’s now about finding how we add new features that players want, new games that people are asking us for that we don’t have, other benefits that they are asking for…’
