Following the news of her death, Glenda Jackson has been called ‘one of our greatest movie actresses’ by co-star Sir Michael Caine, 90.

Jackson had just finished working with the Hollywood legend on The Great Escaper before she died ‘peacefully’ at age 87 after a brief illness.

Sir Michael, who last worked with Jackson nearly 50 years ago in The Romantic Englishwoman, said in a statement to PA: ‘Glenda was one of our greatest movie actresses.

‘It was a privilege to work with her on The Great Escaper recently, our second film together.

‘It was as wonderful an experience this time as it was 50 years ago. I shall miss her.’

Jackson achieved the triple crown of acting, winning two Academy Awards, three Emmy Awards and a Tony Award, with her final film The Great Escaper now in post-production.

She won her Oscar for best actress in 1970 for Women In Love and again three years later for A Touch Of Class but did not attend the ceremony on either occasion.

In 1991, the star gave up acting for politics and became a Labour MP for Hampstead and Highgate, becoming part of Tony Blair’s Cabinet in 1997.

She served for nine years and then made her return to the arts in 2015, appearing in King Lear on stage before making her way back to the silver screen in Mothering Sunday in 2021.

Her agent Lionel Larner said on Thursday: ‘Glenda Jackson, two-time Academy Award-winning actress and politician died peacefully at her home in Blackheath London this morning after a brief illness with her family at her side.’

The Great Escaper has no release date but revolves around Sir Michael’s character Bernard Jordan escaping from his care home to attend the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

Once again Jackson portrays the wife of Sir Michael, 48 years after the duo starred as an estranged husband and his wife who flees to start an affair in Germany in The Romantic Englishwoman.

Flipping their dynamic, this time it is Sir Michael’s character who runs away, leaving behind his loving wife in a true story adaptation.
