With Glastonbury 2023 kicking off tomorrow, rumours are whirring about what surprise acts the festival might have up its – historically impressively long – sleeves.

Not that the lineup isn’t stellar enough as it is with the likes of Elton John, Blondie, Lizzo, Arctic Monkeys, Lana Del Ray, and Cat Stevens/Yusuf down to entertain the 210,000-strong crowd.

But – iconic as it is – Glastonbury also has as long history of surprising festival-goers with some spontaneous (or pre-planned, but surprising nonetheless) performances from some of the world’s most beloved musicians.

Some of the best surprises in the last 20 years featured the likes of Franz Ferdinand, who made an appearance in 2008, and The Libertines, who rocked out with tracks from their new album in 2015.

In 2009, 400 especially lucky festival-goers even witnessed a secret set by Lady Gaga.

Some – ahem – secret sets turn out to be very public knowledge indeed, as whispers spread and suddenly thousands of revellers appear at the, er, undisclosed stage location in anticipation for the ‘surprise’ performance.

And we think we might have just heard about Glastonbury 2023’s first worst kept secret of the year.

In a BBC webcam livestream of Worthy Farm – set up for serious eager beavers who simply cannot wait for the festival to start – the organisers overshared just a little bit.

Running along the bottom of the cloudy festival scene were a list of the acts, their times, and on which stage they are due to perform.

Founded in the 1970s, The Pretenders are a pretty epic addition to the Glasto lineup (Picture: Harry Herd/Redferns)

While we already knew about many of them, there are still a few ‘to be announced’ mystery slots in the official lineup.

One of these is at the Park Stage on Saturday from 19.45 to 20.45, and now we have a sneaky suspicion who this might be now.

After Tinariwen and before Leftfield sat The Pretenders – the band behind hits like I’ll Stand By You, Don’t Get Me Wrong, and Brass in Pocket – on the moving on-screen lineup.

The four-piece rock group were formed in the 1970s and are still going to this day with founding member, 71-year-old Chrissie Hynde.

Other surprise Glastonbury attendees this year are rumoured to be Harry Styles, Britney Spears, Foo Fighters, and Pulp.
