Good Morning Britain viewers have hit out at Richard Madeley over comments he made during coverage of the missing submarine.

Richard, 67, hosted Tuesday’s edition alongside Susanna Reid, 52, in which they gave updates and spoke to experts about the submarine which went missing while on a dive to visit the wreck of Titanic.

A search and rescue mission continues to be underway in the north Atlantic Ocean after coastguards lost contact with the 21-foot vessel on Sunday.

Those onboard, including British billionaire Hamish Harding, have enough oxygen in the submarine until Thursday, it has been said.

Today’s Good Morning Britain saw Richard and Susanna hear from Harding’s friend about the last text he had sent him, while they elsewhere asked experts about the chances the crew have of survival.

At one point, Richard read out Tweets from viewers about the incident, many of which were negative.

He said: ‘There isn’t universal sympathy for their predicament, there’s a lot of people Tweeting in and messaging in saying they’re offering their prayers, that’s the majority, but there’s a significant minority that doesn’t have much sympathy for them.’

He went on to read out some of those comments, before clarifying that the expeditions are scientific and admitting that he found the negative comments ‘cold-hearted’ himself.

However, viewers weren’t impressed that he even read them out, branding it ‘bad judgement’.

‘It was bad taste and bad judgement that Madeley decided to read out the twitter messages from the few idiots who thought the trapped submariners deserved their fate,’ one wrote.

Others took aim at the questions he was asking, including questioning if the submarine could be found at some point today.

One viewer penned: ‘”Might we find them before noon today?” Is Richard Madeley asking whether ITV Daytime will get the scoop on this?’

Another blasted: ‘Bookmaker Madeley asking for the odds of survival. What a p***k.’

‘As Madeley’s questions to the submariners get longer and longer he also keeps trying to take over the interview by stealing Susanna Reid’s auto-cue lines,’ someone else said.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.
