Love Island were ready to gather their pitchforks after Catherine Agbaje broke down in tears following an argument with Sammy Root.

Wednesday’s instalment focused on the fall out from yesterday’s surprising twist which saw OG couples Sammy and Jess Harding and Mitchel Taylor and Leah Taylor officially single in a surprising twist.

Sammy, 22, previously accused Scott Van Der Sluis and Catherine of not being ‘compatible’ in the latest vote and questioned their ‘physical’ attraction towards one another.

Catherine and Whitney Adebayo pulled Sammy aside and demanded to know why he said she and Scott weren’t physically attracted to each other.

Although he stressed she is a ‘beautiful,’ Catherine ended up in tears over his ‘lack’ of understanding.

Viewers immediately offered their perspective over the situation, with one person penning: ‘As a dark skin black woman I know why Cathrine is upset, there’s more behind the comment Sammy made.’

People need to understand why Catherine is crying. As a black girl growing up with beauty standards that are often NOT what we see reflected in the mirror, it is hard to hear Sammy basically say that he doesn’t believe anyone is really attracted to her, it hurts!! #loveisland

Sadly… I think every Black girl understands where Catherine is coming from #LoveIsland pic.twitter.com/GxvnWZ3zlm

I get Catherine’s tears. It’s so frustrating being a black girl on this show #LoveIsland they really treat you like you’re hideous asf and not wanted. It’s madness

I feel like every black girl has been in the same situation as catherine😭 #LoveIsland

Another added: ‘A lot of black girls have felt the frustration Cathrine is expressing. It’s such a s**t feeling.’

A third weighed in: ‘Black girls on love island being seen as undesirable is the worst part of watching.’

Sammy later spoke to Catherine again to apologise, and admitted he had simply meant that she and Scott weren’t a ‘touchy-feely’ couple, rather than meaning to comment on any physical attraction.

The 22-year-old angered fans during yesterday’s episode after he admitted: ‘Without sounding quite bad, I was Jess’ type.

‘She wasn’t mine. I’m the one that’s sort of worked to… try something new explore Jess and now she’s trying to play games. Nah!’

Love Island continues tomorrow at 9pm on ITV2.
