Jonnie Irwin has candidly revealed the one thing he ‘wishes’ he’d done differently amid his terminal cancer diagnosis.

The A Place In The Sun star, 49, revealed in November 2022 that he could have ‘months to live’ after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

He’s since spoken frankly about his illness, which started in his lungs but has now spread to his brain, and even touched upon what he considers ‘mistakes’ in his preparedness for living with cancer.

Jonnie, who shares children Rex, four, and two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac with his wife Jessica Holme, explained he initially kept his diagnosis a secret from the public as he was worried about not being able to provide for his family.

Explaining his financial situation on the OneChat podcast with AIG life, the doting dad-of-three noted: ‘I didn’t take critical illness insurance out and therefore I had to keep working.’

He went on: ‘Without work, I’ve got no means of paying the bills. And if I had taken the critical illness insurance out, that could’ve covered my outgoings and I probably could’ve told the world a lot sooner.’

Jonnie also said: ‘I thought I was doing well just taking out life insurance. It’s one positive thing and helped me a great deal in getting a financial position in life to know my wife and my boys are more secure.

‘But how I wish I’d taken out that extra cover.’

He also heartbreakingly explained: ‘The only reason I kept it secret is because I’ve got to earn, I’ve got to feed my babies, pay the bills.

‘And as soon as you say you’ve got cancer, people just write you off.’

He added: ‘I had to live with it as a secret.
