Lily Allen looked emotional as she left the Duke of York theatre in London after her show The Pillowman garnered less than glowing reviews.
The pop songstress, 38, is currently starring in the stage show as a gender-swapped Katurian as the black comedy receives its first onstage revival.
Created by Martin McDonagh in 2003, it follows Allen’s fictional writer as she is imprisoned by a totalitarian state in which she stars alongside Steve Pemberton and Matthew Tennyson.
However, some believed the anticipation for it to return to the stage fell flat as the show received negative reviews from a number of publications following its opening nights.
And it appears this may have upset the show’s leading lady as she was spotted leaving the theatre in the capital looking teary-eyed as she made her way out of the venue
The star rocked a Shania Twain cap, long brown coat, and green camouflage trousers as she stopped to sign autographs and chat with fans who had waited to meet her.

The Guardian branded the show two out of five stars, saying ‘Lily Allen fails to deliver visceral punch,’ in the show.
The review goes on to say: ‘Under the direction of Matthew Dunster, who also directed Allen in 2:22, the shifts between the comic and macabre do not come off. Allen’s Katurian is too indistinct, quivering with fear or blank-faced, though she delivers her lines efficiently. In the play’s original staging, the part was played by David Tennant, and the character’s gender reversal brings nothing new.’
The Telegraph echoed a similar sentiment, giving the play a lukewarm three out of five stars and saying the show ‘lacked psychological conviction.’

The Independent praised the show, though their reviewer described Allen’s performance as ‘one note’ and ‘frustratingly flat throughout.’
However, the Evening Standard dubbed Allen ‘compulsively watchable’ in the adaptation of the show, which they said was ‘wickedly funny work.’
TV presenter Miquita Oliver also gave her pal Allen a glowing review as she posted a selfie of the pair embracing in her dressing room to her Instagram.
Alongside the heartwarming snap, she wrote: ‘Last night, Lily’s play punched me in the face and f****d me up. There is no other way to put it.

‘Extraordinary performance from Lil. Extraordinary writing from Martin McDonagh.F*****g fantastic set design/storytelling. I am bowled over by all of it. Great work.’
The snap also shows a glimpse of an adorable note from Allen’s husband, Stranger Things ace David Harbour, wishing her good luck for the performance, and saying ‘lova ya, you’re an animal.’
This new adaptation has been created by Matthew Dunster, who previously worked with Allen is 2:22 A Ghost Story.
Allen, who starred as Jenny in the show, was widely praised for this performance, with the premiere production being nominated for three Laurence Olivier Awards in 2022, including Best New Play and Best Actress for Allen.
